Back from the Coast Guard Academy…

Over the weekend I was a leadership development instructor for all the new civilian volunteers in the 1SR District at the Coast Guard Academy. Some things that became clear is a) you really need to push the bad Government Issue coffee to get through the dawn to dusk coursework b) location matters; doing the professional development at the Academy is qualitatively better than a hotel ballroom c) history and culture matter too.

We tend to get caught up with content goals and bullet points on PowerPoints. People don’t work for free because they are trained. They work for free because they are embedded in a supportive culture and because that culture means something. Don’t skimp on the big picture and don’t skimp on the history and legacy you’ll be placing your trainees in. They’ll get the bullet points eventually.
